State emergency officials said a large tornado tore through the area in the southeastern part of the state. Severe weather including more tornadoes will be a possibility across northern Mississippi and Alabama and into central Tennessee Friday afternoon. The storm system will then move into Georgia and the Carolinas overnight Friday and into Saturday morning
National Weather Service officials have confirmed 11 tornado touch-downs in Oklahoma after storms ripped across the state Thursday. The deadliest occurred about 8:15 p.m. in Tushka in Atoka County, where two women were killed. They were identified Friday as 75-year-old Ava Walkup and 80-year-old Sammie Dement, said Cherokee Ballard, a spokeswoman for the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
Emergency management officials and local relief organizations helped weary residents in the town assess the damage and began the process of cleaning up debris-strewn streets and neighborhoods. Large pieces of metal debris remained scattered across the playground at the local school, where the second story of the main building collapsed into the first floor.
Across the street from the school, resident Stacy George slowly plucked items from what was left of her home, where the roof had collapsed and her pickup was pushed into the side of the structure. In her driveway, George laid out clothes, cowboy boots, a penny jar, an oven and a lamp.
Besides Tulsa, other counties in Fallin’s declaration are Atoka, Carter, Coal, Creek, Custer, Delaware, Harper, Johnston, Latimer, LeFlore, Lincoln, Love, Marshall, Murray, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Osage, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pushmataha, Rogers, Seminole, Wagoner, Washington and Woodward.
