Disasters are lurking everywhere and it doesn’t matter how much you mentally prepare yourself, in the end the only thing that will ultimately truly keep you alive is how much you are physically prepared for it. This means having your supplies ready, in order, and available. There are a few basic items that can help you have a better chance at survival, beyond your cell phone, during even the worst natural disaster. It all ultimately depends upon how you use them, and if you can be as ready as you can be before it happens, whether that means you have your LED flashlights or knife in hand or not.

Photo: slworking2

One of the most important items that you can have on you is a personal locator beacon. This is a GPS broadcaster and flashing LED device that will let rescuers know precisely where you are in case you have become lost or trapped. There are many of these available on the market right now and the models continuously get smaller all the time.

Having LED flashlights are a must and offer you a bright and limited power option for being able to see and make visual signals if necessary. These are typically light weight, small, durable, and require only a fraction of what basic standard lights need in power. In fact there are some hand crank models that not only last a surprisingly long amount of time, but they also include radios and cell phone charging ports.

A pocket or utility knife is also a must anytime you go out. Not only is this a handy survival tool, you never really know when you will be confronted with a situation where you need to cut something. You don’t want to be left in a situation where you wished you had one…but didn’t.

One thing people often don’t think of, but can come in equally as handy as a pocket knife, is a military wire saw. This is an item that is inexpensive, flexible, yet provides numerous options for quickly and carefully cutting through things that might end up being in the way.

If at all possible, water and food are also important items to have handy. Although these may be difficult to keep track of and hold onto while you are trying to survive a natural disaster, once you do survive you will need water and food to keep going until help arrives. These are the things that you can only fail to have limited access to it for a short duration before you start to experience even more problems.

As one final suggestion, dry clothing and sleeping supplies are an additional good idea, as well as a first aid kit and protective equipment, such as a pistol.

When it comes time to doing battle against the elements and Nature’s wrath, there are again only so many things you can prepare yourself for. Having items like LED flashlights and others are ways to better protect yourself and survive a terrible situation.

Wherever you live, there is a chance that you and your family may be visited by a natural disaster. Some regions are more prone to tornadoes and hurricanes, others to mudslides, other to earthquakes and forest fires. Political issues can lead to unrest and rioting. Then, of course, there is always the possibility of a zombie apocalypse. (We’re kidding about that last one.)

While the disaster may be different, however, the steps you can take to be more safe in the event of one are largely the same. One very important step is to keep a sufficient amount of emergency supplies on hand, particularly food and water. If your home and or garage does not provide sufficient space, then storage sheds may be one of the most important and best purchases you can make. Make sure that you purchase one with plenty of room for the amount of food and water you and your family will need. For both food and water you’ll want roughly a three day supply. Three gallons of water per person will be needed.

Of course, you will need other supplies, including, very importantly, plenty of first aid materials such as bandages, antiseptics, ace bandages, and so forth. You will also require toilet paper and other personal hygiene needs, flashlights and plenty of batteries, matches, cash — credit cards might not be much use if power is out for an extended period — and all your standard identification. If you have children or pets, of course, you will also need to have their basic needs for food, water, and hygiene (i.e. lots of diapers and kitty litter!) on hand.

Of course, even canned and bottled food and water does not last forever. That means that, even without a disaster, people should make regular visits to their storage sheds as they will want to periodically consume the water and food and replace it with fresh supplies. That means that you should purchase emergency food supplies that you actually like. You will be eating it.

For people around the world, the worst natural disasters of the year were the Sendai, Japan earthquake and tsunami with a magnitude of 8.9. This mega thrust earthquake created a tsunami that reached up to 10 meters. This is now called the Great East Japan Earthquake which caused not only loss of lives and infrastructure, but the tsunami also caused a number of nuclear accidents which affected hundreds of thousands of residents. As this year ends, people must brave themselves for the disasters to come next year. The best way to do this is to implement preventive measures and be prepared always for any eventuality.

The effects of global warming have never been more apparent than ever than in Asian countries. Pounded by monsoon deluges far worst than the last, millions of people had been displaced, agricultural lands drowned and low-lying villages swallowed by flood, and this is for third quarter of the year alone.

The Bangkok flooding had mobilized Bangkokians to secure their homes with sandbags. Despite the government assurances, it did not stop them from raiding supermarkets with necessary stocks of bottled water, dried noodles, flashlight, batteries, candles and other necessities. The biggest flood in Thailand has resulted in over $3 billion in property damages and losses, not to mention the number of lives lost. It is high time that people find alternative solutions for far worst disasters like this to come. It is better to be prepared than be sorry, or just to accept things as they are. It seems that the world is not getting better, so the government must take the necessary precautions and take actions so as to be ready when faced with another disaster like this.

In the event you wish to give in to the feeling of despair and hopelessness each time the exact same panic attacks, it is entirely your choice; but if you say NO to living a complex life full of depression and despair, these suggestions on how you can treat panic attacks will undoubtedly help for how to cure anxiety:

Do not consider your case a permanent impairment in your daily life. Live a regular life! People may have already been able to go via the exact same psychological ordeal once in their lives, and there is no reason that you cannot. Embrace the chance as something that you will have to be thankful for the rest of your life so just maintain in mind, there is nothing more relieving than freeing yourself from unnecessary panic attacks!

The first thing to do: Get a grip on your thoughts and emotions. By the time you experience a panic or anxiety attack, your mind will surely be wandering off in all directions. Attempt to channel your thoughts to something more positive . Take time to remember the way it feels to win, for instance. There are surely numerous other things that bring positive energy into your life, like happiness together with your family, playing with the kids, doing some extreme sports, getting promoted, and the list can goes on. With all your best, interrupt your queue of panics with these positive ideas as fast as you can. Permit your muscles to relax by sitting in a comfortable chair, while breathing in and out heavily but slowly.

For most individuals, the manifestations of panic attacks would be cursing, crying, nail-biting, or even excessively eating. For each action, there should always be a reaction, and you are certainly in control of this. If you cannot control the actions at the moment, surely you are able to take over by tailoring your reactions to the best counter-attack possible. When anxiety strikes, most people will generally run to their friends for lengthy talks, some will takes some hours off work for a walk, some will listen to soothing music, while some will just merely go to sleep. Should you think any of these ways for how to treat panic attacks will help you recover, do not hesitate to make the move right now. Save yourself from all the headaches. Take some action before it is too late!

A wildfire in Central Texas has destroyed nearly 500 homes as it races unchecked through rain-starved farm and ranchland.

Firefighters are working around the clock, and heavy air tankers, which have been brought in from as far away as South Dakota, have been dumping water on the fires. According to Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald, bulldozers and pumper trucks also were deployed against the fire.

Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald said Monday that the fire has destroyed 476 homes. He said 250 firefighters are working around the clock, using bulldozers to cut along the side of the fire and pumper trucks to drench the ground.

At least 5,000 people were forced from their homes in the county about 25 miles east of Austin, many of them fearing the worst while spending the night in emergency shelters.

The county’s emergency management director, Mike Fischer, said the fire is “nowhere near controlled” and that a separate, smaller blaze to the south of the city is growing larger.

Photo: lilianasegura.com

The state deployed its firefighting air fleet, including National Guard helicopters and four heavy tanker planes. It also summoned a tanker from South Dakota. Emergency shelters were set up for those forced to evacuate their homes. About 30 people spent the night at a Bastrop church, waiting to learn if they had lost everything.

The 2011 Texas wildfires are an ongoing series of wildfires that peaked in April and May 2011 and by September 5 had burned over 3,582,000 acres across Texas, United States. Statistics on the fires have been recorded since the beginning of the official Texas fire season on November 15, 2010. The fires have been particularly severe due to the ongoing 2011 Southern US drought covering the state. Exacerbating the problem is a unusual convergence of strong winds, unseasonably warm temperatures and low humidity. Dozens of homes were destroyed in many areas; the largest number of homes lost was around Possum Kingdom Lake.

Hurricane Irene – The strongest storm to hit the east coast in decades is upon us. Please be prepared. Experts are calling this storm an “Extraordinary Threat for New England” because Massachusetts is 190 miles wide and this storm is 430 miles wide. No matter where you are in New England this storm will effect you.

Plan to Protect Property
Hurricanes cause heavy rains that can cause extensive flood damage in coastal and inland areas. Everyone is at risk and should consider flood insurance protection. Flood insurance is the only way to financially protect your property or business from flood damage. To learn more about your flooding risk and how to protect yourself and your business, visit the NFIP Web site, www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-800-427-2419.

Some tips from government websites to help you and your family be prepared for the storm.

Have an emergency kit which should include: non-perishable food, medicine, water, flashlights, battery powered radio and batteries.

Make a family plan to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.

Make sure you have adequate pet food and supplies for your animals. If you have to evacuate – take your pets with you. There are many pet friendly shelters and hotels out there. Now is the time to plan.

Develop a Disaster Supply Kit ‘Go Bag’, with essentials in case you must evacuate quickly.

If you are asked to evacuate – Evacuate!

You should also:

Cover your home’s windows with pre-cut plywood to protect your windows from high winds.

Bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.

Keep all trees and shrubs well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.

Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its door closed.

Turn off propane tanks.

Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage, it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.

Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

Find out how to keep food safe during and after and emergency by visiting www.FoodSafety.gov.

Be Informed
Hurricane hazards come in many forms: lightning, tornadoes, flooding, storm surge, high winds, even landslides or mudslides can be triggered in mountainous regions. Look carefully at the safety actions associated with each type of hurricane hazard and prepare your family disaster plan accordingly. But remember this is only a guide. The first and most important thing anyone should do when facing a hurricane threat is to use common sense.

When Flooding Occurs:

Water Safety

Use bottled water not exposed to flood waters, if available.

If bottled water is not available, boil water for one minute, let it cool, and store it in clean containers with a cover.

If bottled water is unavailable and boiling water is not possible, then drinking water can be made by adding 1/8 teaspoon (or 8 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach to 1 gallon water. Stir it well and let it stand for 30 minutes before using. (If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water before adding bleach.)

Don’t drink water from a well that has flooded unless the water has been tested and shown to be safe to drink.

Food Safety

Do not eat any food directly exposed to flood water.

Do not eat food from non-waterproof containers or damaged cans.

All-metal, non-damaged canned food can be used if the cans are cleaned, rinsed, and sanitized in a solution of 1 tablespoon household bleach in 1 gallon water for 15 minutes. Labels should be removed prior to cleaning, and the cans should be relabeled afterwards.

Thoroughly wash, rinse, and sanitize (using a solution of 1 tablespoon household bleach in 1 gallon of water) all metal pans, ceramic dishes, and utensils (including can openers), and countertops.

Super typhoon Muifa is forecast to strike China as a tropical storm at about 22:00 GMT on 7 August. Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center suggest that the point of land fall will benear36.8 N,122.4 E. Muifa is expected to bring 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 69 mph. Wind gusts in the area may be consider ably higher.

The information above is provided for guidance only and should not be used to make life or death decisions or decisions relating to property. Anyone in the region who is concerned for their personal safety or property should contact their official national weather agency or warning centre for advice.

The typhoon, packing winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour, was originally expected to make landfall near Shanghai. But China’s Central Meteorological Administration now says Muifa is moving northward toward Shandong province and is expected to skim the coast over the next three days.

Although Shanghai will be spared the full force of typhoon Muifa’s high winds and torrential rains, forecasters say the city will likely experience some effects from the storm.

In preparation for Muifa, Chinese authorities canceled more than 100 flights in the region and thousands of ships along the eastern coast were called back to shore.

Authorities also said they were prepared to halt or delay high-speed rail services, depending on the severity of the storm. Emergency officials were readying relief supplies and preparing for evacuations.

Muifa claimed five lives as it passed through the northern and central Philippines earlier this week and lashed the Japanese island of Okinawa Friday with heavy rains and high winds.

Dozens of flights in and out of Shanghai and the nearby cities of Wenzhou and Hangzhou had been canceled by Saturday. The Shanghai government said rail authorities were ready to slow or delay high-speed rail services as well, depending on the severity of the storm.

The Shanghai Daily reported that all outdoor events planned for the weekend had been called off or delayed and construction projects near the coast were suspended.

An emergency message from the US government to Americans living or traveling in eastern China suggested they ‘stock up on emergency supplies of food, water, and cash in case of storm-related power outages.’

China’s National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center warned Muifa could churn up 36 foot waves in the East China Sea and 16 foot waves off the coast.
